Choosing a location for your engagement photos can be overwhelming. How do you choose where to take photos of such a big occasion!? It can be overwhelming trying to choose where you want your engagement session to happen. Let’s talk about five of my favorite locations to shoot engagements in California, and why I love each one.
Let’s start with Palm Springs. I may be biased since I’ve spent a lot of time in this area but I’m telling you there’s so many reasons to love Palm Springs. While your initial thought might be “Paulina it’s so hot there, and isn’t it just a desert?” I am here to tell you the exact opposite! Palm Springs actually has a very diverse landscape which gives you multiple options for a session location.
Along the same lines but a little different is Joshua Tree. This well-known location offers a unique and captivating landscape. What I love about Joshua Tree are the distinct features of this area: massive, beautiful boulders, iconic Joshua Trees, and striking cacti. A sunset session here is truly breathtaking. If a little adventure out into the desert sounds fun, then Joshua Tree is the perfect spot for you!
Next up is Filoli Estate in the Woodside, California. You may have seen this location before, as it has been featured in multiple movies. One pertinent to an engagement shoot is The Wedding Planner. This estate is truly stunning, feeling like it’s straight out of a movie, which explains why it has been a popular set for many Hollywood films. My favorite feature on this property is the sunroom. The best way to describe it is almost like a greenhouse. It’s a small, quaint room with vintage paneling, and the lighting is out of this world. If you’re looking for a movie-worthy backdrop, Filoli Estate is the perfect location for your engagement shoot!
Let’s talk about wine country next. If you love a good glass of wine like I do, you may have already spent some time in Napa! This area is renowned for its wineries, which also make for fantastic photoshoot locations. Depending on the time of year, the vines can be lush green or a gorgeous auburn in the fall. If you’re looking for a natural and intimate setting (with a glass or two of wine afterward), then Napa is the perfect spot for your engagement photos!
The last location I want to highlight is Pebble Beach’s 17-Mile Drive. This famous beach in Monterey, California, offers 17 miles of pristine coastline. I love this spot because a beach shoot is a classic California choice for photos. However, there are unique aspects to this beach. The amazing rock formations provide a distinctive look compared to a typical beach setting. Another feature I adore is the Cypress Grove. This area, filled with cypress trees, offers a totally different backdrop and is easy to visit along with the beach. These trees are unique compared to palm or pine trees, giving a one-of-a-kind appearance. If a classic California beach combined with an additional backdrop sounds perfect, then this is the ideal location for your shoot!
There are countless timeless locations throughout California that are perfect for your sunset engagement photography session. These five spots are among my favorites, each offering its own unique charm and beauty. From the whimsical landscapes of Joshua Tree to the cinematic elegance of Filoli Estate, the picturesque wineries of Napa, and the stunning coastal views of Pebble Beach’s 17-Mile Drive, you have a variety of options to choose from. Whether you’re looking for an adventurous desert setting, a romantic vineyard backdrop, or a classic beach scene, California has it all. Truly, you can’t go wrong with any of these stunning locations. No matter which spot you choose, your engagement photos will capture the magic and beauty of this special time in your life.
