In March 2023, I was hired to capture an elopement in the streets of Paris, France. Afterward, I expressed to my then-fiancé that I wanted to fly to Italy to meet our vendors and explore the property. He suggested joining me to finalize all of our wedding details together. This sparked the idea of flying our photographers out, not only for them to get familiar with the property and our plans, but also to do a destination engagement photography session. Truthfully, this remains my favorite part of our entire wedding journey. Of course, saying “I do” to the man of my dreams was incredible, but when I look back at our engagement images, they take me back to that high-excitement feeling. This experience was invaluable for so many reasons. First, it allowed us to get to know our wedding photographers better before the big day, do multiple outfit changes in different cities, and plan the flow of our wedding before the big day.
As a destination wedding photographer myself, I don’t often have the opportunity to get to know my clients the way I got to know my own wedding photographers. Typically, I meet them for an hour or two at sunset and then part ways at the end of the session. Flying my photographers out to Italy for our destination engagement session gave us the chance to really connect. We stayed in the same Airbnb and explored many beautiful cities together. We became such good friends that we’ve visited each other twice since our wedding day. My husband and I truly cherish our friendship with our wedding photographers, and I would love to create the same experience with my own destination wedding clients.
Secondly, when we visited our wedding venue as a group, we had the opportunity to explore every inch of the villa together. This allowed us to decide where each of us would get ready in the morning, where we wanted to host our first look, how the ceremony would proceed, and more. On our wedding day, I felt confident knowing the plan and trusted that everything would run smoothly. And it did!
Finally, the best part of this experience was having the opportunity to shoot multiple outfits all over Italy. Since I got married in Tuscany, the villa was just an hour away from downtown Florence. We woke up at sunrise and did a session in the streets of Florence while the locals and tourists were still asleep. It was perfect—we had the entire city to ourselves. After visiting our villa, we drove a few hours north to Venice. We thought, why not rent a car and explore another city? My husband had never been to Venice, and we decided it would be a marvelous way to make memories together. The next morning, we woke up at sunrise again to photograph the canals without any visitors. After lunch, we found a quieter area and did another session. Basically, it was perfect—literally everything I could have imagined and more!
So if you’re debating whether to do a destination engagement session, the answer is YES! You will never regret this decision. You’ll create unforgettable memories, bond even more with your one true love, and have the chance to get to know your destination wedding photographers on a deeper level. Plus, you’ll have the ultimate engagement photos that everyone will rave about. These images will be perfect for displaying in your home alongside your wedding photos. Trust me—from my firsthand experience, this is one of the best ideas you could ever have! Plan to do a destination engagement session for you and your finance!
Thank you David Abel for being part of our wedding journey! We cherish these memories and our friendship with you and your family. Looking forward to more adventures with all of you
