Tips about capturing a magical Garrapata State Park Proposal.

I recently photographed a surprise proposal at Garrapata State Park in Carmel, and I’m still in my feelings about it. Rugged cliffs dropping into the Pacific. Wildflowers in every direction. Sea otters floating in the kelp below. If you’re looking for a location that feels cinematic without trying, Garrapata State Park is it!

But here’s the thing, this spot has a learning curve. There’s zero cell service, it’s on the side of Highway 1, and coordinating a surprise proposal here without a solid plan can quickly become chaotic. So whether you’re a photographer scouting your next session location or a couple planning the moment, I want to give you everything you need to make it unforgettable.

What Makes a Garrapata State Park Proposal So Special

Garrapata State Park sits along one of the most dramatic stretches of the Big Sur coastline. Unlike some of the more well known overlooks, it feels undiscovered. The landscape does all the heavy lifting: sea stacks rising from the water, rolling bluffs blanketed in wildflowers, and an ocean view that seems to stretch forever. It’s giving Big Sur, without having to drive deep down the PCH 1. 

For proposals specifically, there’s an intimacy here that more popular spots can’t match. You’re not surrounded by crowds. It’s just the two of them, the wind, and the water. And there is something so romantic about a Carmel sunset. 

The Best Time of Year for a Garrapata State Park Proposal

Timing matters a lot at Garrapata. Because it’s a coastal location, late spring and summer can be hit or miss. The marine layer rolls in and stays, leaving you with flat, gray skies that don’t do the scenery justice.

The best time of year is fall, October and November especially. The fog clears, and the sunsets turn a deep, saturated orange. If you have any flexibility in timing, aim for fall. It’s the kind of light that makes a proposal look like it was pulled from a movie.

That said, a moody overcast day at Garrapata still beats a sunny day at most other locations. If you end up shooting in spring or summer, lean into the drama of it. However, be sure to shoot earlier in the day since it gets darker earlier with fog. 

Also, another thing to keep in mind is how windy this location can be. It’s inevitable being by the coast and having the ocean breeze, so bring something warm to warm in your car as a backup. 

Tips for Photographers: How to Shoot a Garrapata State Park Proposal

Photographing a surprise proposal is already a logistical puzzle. At Garrapata State Park, there’s no cell service and parking means pulling over on a two lane highway, so plan ahead. Here’s what works.

1.  Share your location with the client day-of until the end of the session.

Because there’s no service on-site, establish a plan before anyone loses signal. Share your live location with the proposing partner before you leave for the park, and ask them to do the same. That way, if anything changes, you’ve got a way to track each other while you still have reception.

2.  Get a photo of the couple in advance.

You need to be able to spot them from a distance. Ask your client to send you a recent photo of both of them so you know exactly who you’re looking for when they walk up.

3.  Tell your client what car you drive.

The “parking” at Garrapata is pull-over spots along Highway 1. Your client will be driving past looking for you. Make it easy — tell them the make, model, and color of your car so they can identify you immediately without any confusion.

4.  Tell them what you’ll be wearing, and find out what they’re wearing.

Even better: coordinate this ahead of time. If your clients aren’t sure what to wear, this is your moment to guide them — colors that complement the landscape, layers for the coastal breeze, something that photographs beautifully against greens and ocean blues. And let them know what you’ll have on so they can spot you from a distance.

5.  Drop a Google pin for Gate 7 before you lose service.

Have your client save the pin before they head out. Gate 7 is the access point you’ll be working near, and without a pin, the park entrance can be easy to miss or confuse with other pull-outs along the highway. Send the pin while everyone still has service.

Planning Your Garrapata State Park Proposal: What Couples Should Know

If your partner is surprising you with a proposal at Garrapata, first of all, lucky you!Second, here’s what the experience is actually like so you can be present for it.

The park is accessible right off Highway 1. You’ll park along the road, and within minutes you’ll be standing on cliffs above the ocean. The walk is easy, thankfully not a crazy hike to get to the lookout point. Depending on the time of year, you might see wildflowers covering the hillside, or catch a glimpse of sea otters in the water below.

Wear something you feel like yourself in, but think about the setting: it’s windy, it’s coastal, and it’s beautiful in a rugged, natural way. Layers are always a good idea. And wear shoes you can walk in, because heels on a coastal bluff are not your friend.

Most importantly, trust your photographer. They’ve done the pre-work so you can just be in the moment. That’s especially true with me. I’m happy to help coordinate looks so they complement the background, and each other. Yes, you’re surprising your partner with this proposal. But you or a friend who’s in on it can always suggest what to wear.

A Note on the “No Service” Reality of a Garrapata State Park Proposal

I want to be upfront about this because it changes how you need to plan. Once you’re at Garrapata, there’s no cell service. No texts, no calls, no quick Google search for directions.

That means everything has to be figured out ahead of time: the exact location pin, a description of the car, outfits, and the coordination between photographer and client. If any of that is left until the day of, you’re relying on luck instead of a plan, and that’s how surprises fall apart.

The lack of service isn’t the charming part. It’s the reason preparation matters so much here.
