Everything You Need to Know to Plan Your Dream Celebration in Paradise
Planning a Hawaii engagement session or wedding is one of the most magical decisions a couple can make. Warm trade winds, the scent of plumeria drifting through the air, volcanic peaks painted gold by the setting sun, and the sound of waves curling softly behind you as you reach for the person you love most. Hawaii is not just a backdrop. It is an experience unlike anything else on earth.
As a photographer who has captured love stories across these islands, I can tell you honestly: there is nowhere else quite like it. This guide covers everything you need to know, from which island fits your vibe and budget, to the best times of year to visit, the most magical spots, what to expect to spend, and how to plan a session or ceremony that feels effortless even thousands of miles from home.

Hawaii is consistently ranked among the top destination wedding locations in the world, and the reasons go far beyond the obvious beauty. For starters, the light here is extraordinary, with longer and softer golden hours than almost anywhere on the mainland. In addition, every island offers something completely different: lush rainforests, dramatic sea cliffs, black sand beaches, lavender farms, volcano craters above the clouds. And because Hawaii doubles as a honeymoon destination, your guests are already in paradise from the moment they land.
From a photographer’s perspective, Hawaii is truly a gift. The natural backdrops do so much of the work, and when the couple is present, relaxed, and in love, the images are simply extraordinary.

Each of Hawaii’s four main islands has a distinct personality. Choosing the right one sets the tone for your entire experience.
Oahu: Most Popular, Most Accessible
Oahu is Hawaii’s most visited island and the epicenter of destination weddings. It has the widest range of venues, the largest vendor network, and the most direct flights from the mainland. For example, you can choose between iconic Waikiki, the dramatic Diamond Head crater, the powdery white sands of Lanikai Beach with the twin Na Mokulua islands in the distance, and the cinematic valley of Kualoa Ranch. If you want energy, variety, and a classic Hawaii feel, Oahu is your island.
Best time to visit: April–October for the driest, sunniest weather. Shoulder months (April–June, September–November) offer the best value with fewer crowds.
Most popular spots: Lanikai Beach, Diamond Head, Kualoa Ranch, Ko Olina Lagoons.
Price range: Engagement sessions from $800–$2,500+. Elopements $3,000–$8,000. Full weddings $15,000–$100,000+ depending on venue and guest count. Oahu is generally the most expensive island, but also offers the widest range of price points.

Maui: Most Romantic, Most Luxurious
Maui is widely considered the most romantic Hawaiian island, and for good reason. Its combination of world-class beaches, cascading waterfalls, luxury resorts, and the surreal sunrise above the clouds at Haleakala makes it a dream for couples who want nothing short of extraordinary. Moreover, the western and southern shores (Wailea, Kaanapali, Makena) are sunny and dry nearly year-round. Winter, however, brings the bonus of humpback whale season. Imagine whales breaching behind you in your ceremony photos.
Best time to visit: Year-round on the west and south shores. Sweetest spots are April–June and September–November for value and thinner crowds.
Most popular spots: Wailea Beach, Makena Cove (Secret Beach), Haleakala Summit at sunrise, Road to Hana.
Price range: Engagement sessions from $900–$2,800+. Elopements $3,000–$10,000. Full weddings $20,000–$60,000+. Luxury venues like the Four Seasons and Andaz Maui are among the most coveted in the state.

Kauai: Least Visited, Most Dramatic
Kauai is Hawaii’s best-kept secret. Because it is the least visited of the four main islands, you will not be fighting tour buses at a waterfall or sharing your beach with a crowd. Instead, what you will find is some of the most awe-inspiring natural scenery on earth: the soaring emerald sea cliffs of the Na Pali Coast, the jewel-toned Waimea Canyon (dubbed the Grand Canyon of the Pacific), and lush, rain-soaked valleys that feel like another world entirely. As a result, Kauai is ideal for couples who want privacy, nature, and a deeply intimate experience.
Best time to visit: The south shore (Poipu) is sunny year-round. The north shore (Hanalei, Princeville) is most accessible and stunning May–September.
Most popular spots: Na Pali Coast, Hanalei Bay, Waimea Canyon, Tunnels Beach, Secret Beach.
Price range: Engagement sessions from $800–$2,500+. Elopements $2,500–$8,000. Full weddings $15,000–$50,000+. Kauai is one of the more affordable islands for intimate celebrations while still delivering jaw-dropping scenery.

The Big Island: Most Unique, Most Underrated
The Big Island is unlike anywhere else on earth. It is the youngest island in the chain, and in some places still actively creating itself. Where else can you watch lava glow at twilight and sip Kona coffee at sunrise the next morning? Furthermore, the Big Island offers the most diverse scenery of any island: black sand beaches, snow-capped peaks, ancient lava fields, lush rainforests, and some of the most dramatic ocean cliffs in the Pacific. In fact, it is the most underrated wedding and engagement destination in Hawaii, which makes it quietly one of the best.
Best time to visit: The Kona (west) side is dry and sunny year-round. April–October is most reliable. Winter brings cooler temps at elevation but incredible atmosphere near the volcano.
Most popular spots: Waipio Valley Overlook, Punaluu Black Sand Beach, Pololu Valley, Hapuna Beach, Mauna Kea summit.
Price range: Engagement sessions from $750–$2,200+. Elopements $2,500–$8,000 (Hapuna Beach State Park permits start around $500). Full luxury weddings $20,000–$80,000+ at resorts like the Four Seasons Hualalai. The Big Island offers some of the best value in Hawaii for intimate celebrations.

Planning a destination celebration is more straightforward than it sounds, especially when you have the right team in place. Here is a simple roadmap.

As a photographer, here is what I wish every couple knew before their Hawaii session.

There is something about Hawaii that makes proposals feel inevitable. The beauty calls it forth. If you are planning to pop the question, here are a few things to keep in mind.
Choose a Moment That Feels Like You
The location matters, but the moment matters more. In fact, some of the most beautiful proposals I have captured happened not at a famous landmark, but at a quiet beach the couple discovered together, or during a spontaneous sunset walk that became the best moment of their lives. Think about what feels most authentic to your relationship.
That said, Hawaii’s iconic spots exist for a reason. For example, proposing above the clouds at Haleakala on Maui, on the clifftops overlooking the Na Pali Coast on Kauai, at sunrise on Lanikai Beach on Oahu, or beside the sea turtles on Punaluu’s black sand on the Big Island are experiences that will take both of your breaths away.

Have a Photographer There to Capture It
Above all, please hire a photographer to capture the moment. A surprise proposal is one moment you cannot recreate. Having someone positioned nearby to capture your partner’s expression, the ring, the tears, and the first embrace as an engaged couple is something you will treasure every day for the rest of your life. One of my favorite offerings is a proposal-to-session experience: I capture the proposal candidly, and once the happy chaos settles, we transition right into a full engagement session while you are both still glowing. The images from those sessions are always my favorites.

Hawaii will exceed every expectation you bring to it. The islands hold something ancient and generous in their spirit, a feeling of being exactly where you are supposed to be. When you arrive with someone you love, that feeling only deepens.
So whether you are coming for a sunrise engagement session on a quiet beach, an intimate elopement at sunset, or a full celebration with everyone you love, your Hawaii story is waiting. I would love to help you tell it. Reach out and let’s start planning something extraordinary together!
