Instead, what you will find is some of the most awe-inspiring natural scenery on earth: the soaring emerald sea cliffs of the Na Pali Coast, the jewel-toned Waimea Canyon (dubbed the Grand Canyon of the Pacific), and lush, rain-soaked valleys that feel like another world entirely. In fact, it is the most underrated wedding and engagement destination in Hawaii, which makes it quietly one of the best.

Best time to visit: The Kona (west) side is dry and sunny year-round. April–October is most reliable. Winter brings cooler temps at elevation but incredible atmosphere near the volcano.

Most popular spots: Waipio Valley Overlook, Punaluu Black Sand Beach, Pololu Valley, Hapuna Beach, Mauna Kea summit.

Planning a destination celebration is more straightforward than it sounds, especially when you have the right team in place. Here is a simple roadmap.

• First, start early. Top photographers, planners, and venues on Oahu and Maui book 14–18 months in advance during peak season. Reach out sooner than you think you need to.
• Next, choose your season wisely. For the best combination of weather, value, and fewer crowds, aim for April–June or September–November. These shoulder months offer gorgeous conditions at more accessible pricing than peak summer or the winter holidays.
• Additionally, get your Hawaii marriage license early. You can apply online through the Hawaii Department of Health. There is no waiting period, and the license is valid statewide.
• Also, work with local vendors. A Hawaii-based photographer, planner, or coordinator will know exactly which locations are stunning at which time of day, which permits you need, and how to navigate the islands with ease. That local knowledge is invaluable.
• Finally, build in buffer time. Hawaii runs on island time, and that is part of its magic. Leave room in your timeline to breathe, wander, and be surprised by something beautiful.

Photographer Tips for Your Hawaii Engagement or Wedding

As a photographer, here is what I wish every couple knew before their Hawaii session.

• First and foremost, time your session around the light. Golden hour, the hour before sunset, produces a warm, luminous glow that is unlike anything else. Sunrise sessions, similarly, offer soft, ethereal light with virtually no crowds. Avoid midday sun between 10am and 3pm if you can; even paradise has harsh overhead light.
• Next, wear colors that love the islands. Soft, airy tones like blush, ivory, sage, and terracotta photograph beautifully against Hawaii’s landscape. When in doubt, ask your photographer what works best for your specific location.
• Additionally, consider a wardrobe change. Many couples bring two outfits: something more formal for dramatic landscape shots, and something casual for playful beach moments. As a result, you get beautiful variety throughout your gallery.
• Above all, let go and be present. The couples with the most beautiful photos are the ones who laughed, danced in the water, and forgot the camera was there. The best images always come from genuine moments. Your only job is to be fully present with the person you love.
• Finally, arrive 20–30 minutes early. Parking can be limited at popular spots, so you want to arrive calm and unhurried. A slow, relaxed arrival always makes for a better session.

Think about what feels most authentic to your relationship.

That said, Hawaii’s iconic spots exist for a reason. For example, proposing above the clouds at Haleakala on Maui, on the clifftops overlooking the Na Pali Coast on Kauai, at sunrise on Lanikai Beach on Oahu, or beside the sea turtles on Punaluu’s black sand on the Big Island are experiences that will take both of your breaths away.
