The Best Destinations, What to Spend, How to Stay Safe, and Everything Else You Need to Know About Getting Married in Mexico:
Getting married in Mexico might be the best decision you make for your wedding day. Bougainvillea spilling over whitewashed walls, mariachi filling a candlelit courtyard, a Pacific sunset setting the ocean on fire behind you, and a table full of the people you love most sharing mezcal and dancing until the stars come out. Mexico does not just host weddings. It celebrates them, at a fraction of what you would spend almost anywhere else.
As a photographer who shot a wedding in Sayulita, one of the most magical coastal towns in Mexico, I have seen firsthand what this country does to a couple on their wedding day. The warmth, the color, and the spirit of celebration here find their way into every photograph. This guide covers the best destinations, what to expect to spend, how to stay safe, and what you need to know about planning your Mexico wedding from start to finish.

Mexico is one of the top destination wedding locations in the world, and the reasons go beyond the scenery. For starters, the value is extraordinary. The average destination wedding in Mexico costs between $8,000 and $15,000, compared to a national U.S. average of over $33,000. That means more of your budget goes toward the people and the experience rather than the logistics. In addition, Mexico offers a cultural richness that elevates every celebration: the lazo ceremony, the late-night taco cart, the mariachi that arrives just when the dancing peaks. This is a country that genuinely knows how to throw a wedding.

Mexico is a vast and diverse country, so choosing the right region sets the tone for everything else. Here is an honest look at the four most popular destinations for couples.
At the southern tip of Baja California, where the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez, Los Cabos delivers some of the most dramatic wedding scenery in all of Mexico. Rust-colored desert cliffs drop into the sea, the iconic Arch of Cabo San Lucas rises from the water like something from a dream, and the sunsets here stop guests mid-sentence. It is also one of the safest and most tourist-friendly regions in Mexico, with world-class resorts and a well-established wedding vendor community.
Best time to get married: October through June. July through September brings heat and occasional Pacific storm activity.
Most popular spots: The Arch of Cabo San Lucas, Lover’s Beach, Palmilla Beach, One&Only Palmilla, Las Ventanas al Paraiso.
Price range: Intimate ceremonies from $5,000 to $15,000. Full resort weddings from $20,000 to $50,000+. Los Cabos is the most expensive wedding destination in Mexico, but it also delivers the most polished, luxury experience.
Stretching along Mexico’s Caribbean coast from Cancun through Playa del Carmen and Tulum, the Riviera Maya is the most visited wedding destination in the country. The water is an impossible shade of turquoise, the resorts range from massive all-inclusive properties to intimate boutique hotels, and the variety of ceremony settings is unmatched anywhere in Mexico. You can exchange vows on a white sand beach with two hundred guests, in a jungle clearing in Tulum with twenty, or inside a cenote, one of the ancient freshwater sinkholes sacred to the Maya, for something truly unlike anything else on earth.
Best time to get married: December through April for dry, sunny weather. The hurricane season runs June through November, with August through October carrying the highest risk. November, however, is a beautiful sweet spot: crowds thin, prices drop, and the weather stays warm and mostly dry.
Most popular spots: Tulum beachfront venues and ruins, Playa del Carmen beach clubs, cenote ceremonies throughout the Yucatan Peninsula.
Price range: All-inclusive resort packages from $3,000 to $15,000+. Most couples spend around $9,000 to $10,000 for the wedding itself, making it the most budget-friendly of the four destinations.
If the Riviera Maya is Mexico’s most glamorous coast, the Puerto Vallarta region is its most soulful. Nestled between lush jungle mountains and the sparkling Banderas Bay on the Pacific, Puerto Vallarta has genuine character: cobblestone streets, vibrant street art, world-class restaurants, and beaches that range from lively to completely secluded. About 45 minutes north of the airport lies Sayulita, the bohemian surf town where I photographed a wedding that I still think about. Colorful flags strung between palm trees, the scent of street tacos, surfers at golden hour, and jungle hills tumbling down to the ocean. For couples who want something intimate and deeply memorable, it is unlike anywhere else in Mexico.
Best time to get married: November through May is the dry season and most reliable for outdoor ceremonies.
Most popular spots: Don Pedro’s Palapa in Sayulita, TeiTiare Estate, Puerto Vallarta’s Old Town cathedral district, hillside villas above the bay.
Price range: Intimate Sayulita weddings from $4,000 to $12,000. Full Puerto Vallarta celebrations from $10,000 to $30,000+ depending on venue and guest count.
For couples who want Mexico without the beach, San Miguel de Allende is in a category entirely its own. This UNESCO World Heritage city in the highlands of Guanajuato offers rose-colored baroque churches, flower-draped colonial mansions, extraordinary hacienda venues, and a warm glowing afternoon light that is a photographer’s dream. It is also one of the safest cities in Mexico, with no hurricane season to navigate, making it a reliable and romantic option year-round.
Best time to get married: Year-round, though March through May and October through December are most pleasant. Late October coincides with the spectacular Dia de los Muertos celebrations.
Most popular spots: The Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel, rooftop venues overlooking the city skyline, historic haciendas in the surrounding countryside.
Price range: Hacienda and boutique venue weddings from $10,000 to $40,000+, with some of the most visually stunning venue spaces in all of Mexico.

This is the question every couple asks, and it deserves a direct answer. Yes, the most popular wedding destinations in Mexico are safe for international visitors when you choose your region carefully. Los Cabos, the Riviera Maya, Puerto Vallarta, Sayulita, and San Miguel de Allende are all well-established tourist areas with strong security infrastructure and millions of international visitors each year. Nearly 80 million people visited Mexico in 2025, and the vast majority did so without incident.
That said, a few smart habits go a long way: always use vetted, licensed transportation, stay in well-lit tourist areas after dark, and book vendors through a reputable local coordinator. Before you book, check the U.S. State Department’s current travel advisories. The destinations in this guide generally carry Level 2 advisories, which simply recommend increased caution. States with Level 3 or 4 advisories, such as Guerrero and Tamaulipas, are best avoided altogether for wedding travel.

Getting legally married in Mexico requires more paperwork than most couples expect, including apostilled birth certificates translated into Spanish, blood tests completed at a Mexican laboratory within 14 days of the ceremony, four witnesses with valid ID, and arriving 3 to 4 business days early to complete civil registry paperwork. Because of this, many couples choose to legally marry at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Mexico instead. This is extremely common, completely valid, and your guests will never know the difference. Talk to your wedding coordinator early about which route makes the most sense for you.

Planning a destination wedding in Mexico is more manageable than it sounds. Here is a simple roadmap to follow.

From the dramatic luxury of Los Cabos to the turquoise magic of the Riviera Maya, the bohemian soul of Sayulita, and the timeless romance of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico has a wedding destination for every couple and every vision. Moreover, it does all of this at a price that lets you celebrate without compromise.
So if you are dreaming of a wedding day that costs less, feels more alive, and creates memories your guests will talk about for years, getting married in Mexico might be exactly the answer. I would love to be part of your day. Reach out and let’s start planning something unforgettable together!
